The Traffic stat itself will remain intact, but if the Lindens are successful in removing bots, it will become a metric that truly reflects Resident in-world activity. (Non-traffic bots, such as those made to act as showroom mannequins, will still be allowed according to this announcement, Land Bots, programmed to search and buy available parcels, will likely be prohibited by the end of 2009.) These are artificial avatars that are logged into Second Life through open source versions of the SL viewer to artificially boost a landowner's ranking, which in turn influences the location's place in the world Search function. After more than a year-of Resident complaint and controversy, Linden land manager Jack Linden has announced that starting next week, it will be considered a use violation to employ bot avatars to game the world's Traffic stat.
